The counselors at Carolina Partners work with patients in a couple of different ways, though the goal of treatment is always the same. Our counselors work hard to help individuals understand why they are acting and thinking in ways that are troubling or dangerous to themselves. This understanding often allows an individual to have more control over their behaviors and to change these behaviors. One of the specific ways in which our counselors and clinical psychologists help a person understand and better control their behavior is through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is a treatment that focuses on the relationship between an individual’s thought, feelings, and behaviors. A common goal through this type of therapy is to recognize negative thoughts or mindsets and to replace them with positive ones. Positive thoughts then often lead to healthier behavior. Another common form of treatment used by our counselors includes Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). DBT is a form of psychotherapy that was originally developed by Marsha M. Linehan, a psychology researcher at the University of Washington, to treat people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT combines standard cognitive-behavioral techniques for emotion regulation and reality-testing with concepts of distress tolerance, acceptance, and mindful awareness.
